The
next
meeting
of
The
Milum
Philosophers™
is
scheduled
for
Saturday,
November
10,
2007,
at
the
headquarters
of
the
Universal
Light
Institute.
At
our
last
meeting
(in
October),
we
analyzed
the
underlying
nature
of
the
most
profound
problems
facing
humanity.
At
this
meeting,
we
will
begin
to
propose
workable
solutions
to
some
of
these
problems
as
well
as
envision
the
future
of
civilization.
In
so
doing,
we
will
consider
the
following
time
frames:
(a)
the
next
eighteen
months,
(b)
the
next
1˝
to
ten
years,
and
(c)
the
next
ten
to
100
years.

In

we
instead
chose
to
have
a
Unity

*Colloquium
-
a
type
of
academic
lecture.
Typically,
a
colloquium
talk
is
a
single
lecture
offered
to
a
broader
audience
than
the
audience
of
a
seminar.
Audience
members
are
not
expected
to
have
detailed
specialist
knowledge
of
the
subject
matter.
Colloquia
are
often
part
of
a
series,
but
generally
the
individual
lectures
are
not
related
to
one
another.

of
The
Milum
Philosophers™
was
Saturday,
May
12,
2007,
at
the
headquarters
of
the
Universal
Light
Institute.
The
following
is
a
summary
prepared
by
Connie
Curts
of
the
evening's
activities:
Vince
facilitated
discussions
about
the
self-inventories
that
each
of
us
filled
out
with
questions
such
as
what
made
us
happy
and
unhappy,
and
what
we
would
like
to
see
in
an
ideal
world.
The
consensus
was
that
each
of
us
would
like
a
peaceful
world,
but
we
had
different
ideas
of
the
values
that
needed
to
be
stressed
to
get
and
keep an
ideal
environment.
We
also
discussed
our
role
models,
which
happened
to
include
many
authors,
and
why
we
selected
them.
Connie
spoke
about
Shamanism
and
her
work
with
Red
Crow,
her
spiritual
counselor
and
teacher.
Norm
gave
out rubber
bracelets
that
said
"A
complaint
free
world,"
encouraging
us
to try
living
for
21
days
without
complaining,
because
complaints
are
from
hurts
inside
of
ourselves.
This
is
inspired
by
the
seminar
of
Gary
Zukav
that
he
attended
which
highlighted
the
work
of
a
local
Unity
Church
which
has
made
world-wide
news
with
its
campaign
to
freely
distribute
millions
of
complaint-free
bracelets.
(I
can't
remember
the
name
of
the
local
Unity
minister
who
initiated
this
program.)
We
explored
the
"Joy
of
Sects"
web
site
(www.joyofsects.com)
and
engaged
in
a
discussion
of
cosmogony
and
teleology
as
well
as
the
existence
of
god
in
general.
We
also
took
note
of
Roy
Blunt's
support
for
nuclear
war
advocate,
the
televangelist
John
Hagee.
Lastly,
we
discussed
the
Al
Sharpton
vs.
Christopher
Hitchens
debate
which
touched
upon
all
of
the
above.
We
briefly
discussed
NATO
expansion
and
the
treaty
implications
of
conflict
in
either
Estonia
or
Ukraine.
PowerPoint
maps
of
the
region
and
concerned
nations
were
used
to
guide
the
discussion.
Prior
to
our
May
get-together,
the
following
were
suggested
for
consideration:
The
hand
with
a
wheel
on
the
palm
symbolizes
the
Jain
Vow
of
Ahimsa,
meaning
non-violence.
The
word
in
the
middle
is
"ahimsa."
The
wheel
represents
the
dharmacakra,
to
halt
the
cycle
of
reincarnation
through
relentless
pursuit
of
truth.

"Freedom

nearly

With

Excerpt
2:
"Everyone
has
the
right
to
freedom
of
thought,
conscience
and

this
right
includes
freedom
to
change
his

Article

Excerpt
3:
"The
Sapir-Whorf
hypothesis,
which
states
that
thought
is
inherently
embedded
in
language,
would
support
the
claim
that
an
effort
to
limit
the
use
of
words
of
language
is
actually
a
form
of
restricting
freedom
of
thought."
The
Milum
Philosophers™
is
a
group
of
aligned
but
not
like-thinking
individuals
who
are
dedicated
to
expanding
their
spiritual
awareness
and
improving
the
quality
of
life
for
the
whole
of
humanity.
Autodidactic*
by
nature,
they
meet
routinely
throughout
the
year
to
share
ideas
and
to
experience
fellowship.
They
enthusiastically
invite
newcomers
to
join
the
party!
*Autodidacticism
(also
autodidactism)
is
self-education
or
self-directed
learning.
An
autodidact,
also
known
as
an
automath,
is
a
mostly
self-taught
person
—
typically
someone
who
has
an
enthusiasm
for
self-education
and
a
high
degree
of
self-motivation…
A
person
may
become
an
autodidact
at
nearly
any
point
in
his
or
her
life.
While
some
may
have
been
educated
in
a
conventional
manner
in
a
particular
field,
they
may
choose
to
educate
themselves
in
other,
often
unrelated
areas.
It
should
be
noted
that
self-teaching
and
self-directed
learning
are
not
necessarily
lonely
processes.
Some
autodidacts
spend
a
great
deal
of
time
in
libraries
or
on
educative
Web
sites.
Many,
according
to
their
plan
for
learning,
avail
themselves
of
instruction
from
family
members,
friends,
or
other
associates
(although
strictly
speaking
this
might
not
be
considered
autodidactic)…
After
his
initial
education,
Mythologist
Joseph
Campbell
exemplified
the
autodidact
method.
Following
completion
of
his
master's
degree,
Campbell
decided
not
to
go
forward
with
his
plans
to
earn
a
doctorate,
and
he
went
into
the
woods
in
upstate
New
York,
reading
deeply
for
five
years.
According
to
Campbell,
this
is,
in
a
sense,
where
his
real
education
took
place,
and
the
time
when
he
began
to
develop
his
unique
view
on
the
nature
of
life.
According
to
poet
and
author
Robert
Bly,
a
friend
of
Campbell,
Campbell
developed
a
systematic
program
of
reading
nine
hours
a
day.
It
is
speculated
by
some
that
Campbell
felt
the
work
he
did
during
this
time
was
far
more
rigorous
than
any
doctoral
program
could
have
been,
and
more
fruitful
in
developing
his
unique
perspectives.
