Part

honoring
the
memory
of
John
Lennon
who
was
assassinated
on
December

1980.
The
following
is
a

announcement:
NEW
YORK
—
Yoko
Ono
is
calling
for
the
anniversary
of
the
death
of
her
husband,
John
Lennon,
to
become
a
day
of
worldwide
healing.
In
a
full-page
advertisement
appearing
in
[the
November

Sunday
editions
of
The
New
York
Times,
Ono
urges
readers
to
mark
the
anniversary
by
apologizing
to
those
who
have
suffered
because
of
violence
and
war.
“Every
year,
let’s
make
December
8th
the
day
to
ask
for
forgiveness
from
those
who
suffered
the
insufferable,”
writes
the
former
Beatle’s
widow,
who
signs
the
letter
Yoko
Ono
Lennon.
Ono
urges
readers
to
take
responsibility
for
failing
to
intervene
on
behalf
of
victims
around
the
world.
“Know
that
the
physical
and
mental
abuse
you
have
endured
will
have
a
lingering
effect
on
our
society,”
she
writes
in
a
portion
of
the
letter
directed
to
victims.
“Know
that
the
burden
is
ours.”

When
the

Brian

For

The

part
of
a
protest
against
the
injustices
of
India's

By

and
the
above-cited
segment
from
the
Fox
News
program,
"The
O'Reilly

The
featured
topic
of
discussion
was:
What
role
does
"class
warfare"
play
in
America's
Global
War
On
Terrorism?
What
are
the
"classes"
in
this
so-called
"Clash
of
Civilizations"?
How
should
these
class
differences
be
addressed?
What
internecine
implications
are
there?
Our
focus
went
beyond
the
historical
constraints
of
defining
"class"
in
strictly
economic
terms.
An
aspect
of
our
exploration
was
the
mass
media's
objectification
of
projected
enemies.
Background:
Historical
materialism
is
the
methodological
approach
to
the
study
of
society,
economics
and
history
which
was
first
articulated
by
Karl
Marx
(1818-1883),
although
Marx
himself
never
used
the
term.
Historical
materialism
as
an
explanatory
system
has
been
expanded
and
refined
by
thousands
of
academic
studies
since
Marx’s
death.
Historical
materialism
looks
for
the
causes
of
developments
and
changes
in
human
societies
in
the
way
in
which
humans
collectively
make
the
means
to
life,
thus
giving
an
emphasis,
through
economic
analysis,
to
everything
that
co-exists
with
the
economic
base
of
society
(e.g.
social
classes,
political
structures,
ideologies).
Marx
argued
that
the
history
of
European
society
had
progressed
though
the
following
stages
or
modes
of
production.
Each
mode
of
production
had
its
own
economic
system
which
gave
rise
to
a
system
of
class
stratification
based
around
ownership
of
the
means
of
production:
-
primitive
communism
-
slave
society
-
feudalism
-
capitalism
