A previous meeting of The Milum Philosophers™ was Saturday, December 9, 2006, at the headquarters of the Universal Light Institute.  This was also our 2006 Holiday Party.  Part of the event was dedicated to honoring the memory of John Lennon who was assassinated on December 8, 1980.  The following is a related announcement:

NEW YORK — Yoko Ono is calling for the anniversary of the death of her husband, John Lennon, to become a day of worldwide healing.  In a full-page advertisement appearing in [the November 26, 2006] Sunday editions of The New York Times, Ono urges readers to mark the anniversary by apologizing to those who have suffered because of violence and war.  “Every year, let’s make December 8th the day to ask for forgiveness from those who suffered the insufferable,” writes the former Beatle’s widow, who signs the letter Yoko Ono Lennon.  Ono urges readers to take responsibility for failing to intervene on behalf of victims around the world.  “Know that the physical and mental abuse you have endured will have a lingering effect on our society,” she writes in a portion of the letter directed to victims.  “Know that the burden is ours.”  (Source: AP)

A previous meeting of The Milum Philosophers™ was Friday, November 24, 2006, at the headquarters of the Universal Light Institute. Our special "mystery" guest was Barbara "Aislin" Hamilton who drove in from Columbus, Ohio.  In addition to welcoming our new member "Dave" and discussing the issues of the day (in particular the recent November 2006 elections), much of the evening was spent listening to music and watching music videos.

A previous meeting of The Milum Philosophers™ was Saturday, October 28, 2006, at the headquarters of the Universal Light Institute. When the meeting was held, Lynne Milum conducted a PowerPoint presentation on Sacred Contracts.  Brian Lawrence conducted a guided meditation. Arvind Khetia conducted a seminar on the Hindu faith.

For true philosophical thinkers, we pose this question to ponder: If Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is demonized, why is Mordechai Vanunu not venerated?

Suggested reading #1:

Low-caste Hindus adopt new faith

Excerpt: "Thousands of people have been attending mass ceremonies in India at which hundreds of low-caste Hindus (Dalits) converted to Buddhism and Christianity. The events in the central city of Nagpur are part of a protest against the injustices of India's caste system. By converting, Dalits — once known as Untouchables — can escape the prejudice and discrimination they normally face."

Suggested reading #2:

Israeli army bulldozer crushes US peace protester in Gaza Strip
Peace campaigner killed as Israeli army destroys homes
in Palestinian refugee camp

Excerpt: "An Israeli army bulldozer crushed an American peace activist to death in the Gaza Strip yesterday in what witnesses described as a deliberate killing. Rachel Corrie, 23, died as she attempted to prevent the military destroying homes in the Rafah refugee camp, one of the most dangerous in the occupied territories."

A previous meeting of The Milum Philosophers™ occurred on Saturday, September 30, 2006, at the headquarters of the Universal Light Institute.  At the meeting, wwe each presented our personal creeds.  In addition, we listened to an extended audio excerpt from the film, Inherit the Wind — a film which dealt specifically with the teaching of evolution in public schools but more universally about the conflict between tradition and modernity.

Read the latest salvo: Mayor Rocky Anderson Speech

Per co-facilitator Connie Curts' request, each of us needs to consider the following questions:

bullet

When is it appropriate to kill someone?  (euthanasia, death penalty, self
defense, etc.)

bullet

When is it appropriate to kill an animal, if we respect life as part of our
personal values?

bullet

When is it appropriate to do nothing about the other person's plight?

bullet

What is "situational ethics"?  Is it a cop-out or a description of an
ignored moral issue? or what?

bullet

Does our belief system macromanage or micromanage followers?  Why?  and is it needed for faith?

A previous meeting of The Milum Philosophers™ occurred on Saturday, September 9, 2006, at the headquarters of the Universal Light Institute.

The featured guest was Larry Kirkwood of Kirkwood Studios who discussed body casting.

Surprise Co-Host was Vince Milum (Junior) who flew in for the event.  Vince played a clip from Fox News' O'Reilly Factor which featured father and son (Vincent Milum Sr. + Jr.) defending the (much-maligned) First Amendment.

There were two featured videos: (1) an extended excerpt of a Bo Lozoff lecture to a group of medical professionals at the University of Florida; (2) a video montage produced by Vince Milum Junior including three clips from Monty Python's Life of Brian, a song by Todd Rundgren entitled 'Fascist Christ,' and the above-cited segment from the Fox News program, "The O'Reilly Factor."

The featured topic of discussion was: What role does "class warfare" play in America's Global War On Terrorism?  What are the "classes" in this so-called "Clash of Civilizations"?  How should these class differences be addressed?  What internecine implications are there?

Our focus went beyond the historical constraints of defining "class" in strictly economic terms.  An aspect of our exploration was the mass media's objectification of projected enemies.  Background:

Historical materialism is the methodological approach to the study of society, economics and history which was first articulated by Karl Marx (1818-1883), although Marx himself never used the term. Historical materialism as an explanatory system has been expanded and refined by thousands of academic studies since Marx’s death.

Historical materialism looks for the causes of developments and changes in human societies in the way in which humans collectively make the means to life, thus giving an emphasis, through economic analysis, to everything that co-exists with the economic base of society (e.g. social classes, political structures, ideologies).

Marx argued that the history of European society had progressed though the following stages or modes of production. Each mode of production had its own economic system which gave rise to a system of class stratification based around ownership of the means of production:

  1. primitive communism

  2. slave society

  3. feudalism

  4. capitalism

On August 27, 2006, four members of The Milum Philosophers™ (Vince, Lynne, Parker and Mary) went to the Rime Buddhist Center (in Kansas City, Missouri) to meet and "experience" Bo Lozoff of the Human Kindness Foundation.  Bo is most renowned for his work with prison inmates across the United States.  A self-described "Hindu-Christian," Bo weaves multiple strands of spiritual consciousness into a reality-based modus vivendi for confronting our confinements — be they literal or metaphorical.

On August 26, 2006,  The Milum Philosophers™ gathered at the headquarters of the Universal Light Institute for a viewing of the documentary, Why We Fight, which explores the roots and ramifications of America's Global War on Terrorism.  Following the movie there was a group discussion which allowed participants to articulate their views regarding America's War On Terrorism, particularly in regard to the current War in Iraq and the possibly pending War with Iran.  Later, the group listened to an excerpt from the alternative news program CounterSpin which provides a strikingly alternative take on the leading news stories of the week emanating from the dominant media.
